Gothic Room - Draculas gaff perhaps

So my poor blog has been sadly forgotten the last while, namely because my time has been pumped into my course on Games Design.  So I thought I'd post up a room I created in 3dsMax for a change, as it is arty, it does mean I'm creating stuff, it's just with a different type of medium.
For someone (me that is) that is new to this software, I am chuffed that the room managed to get made at all!  Next semester is going to be as challenging no doubt, so I'll probably post up bits that I create as a way of keeping my blog up to date.
Anyway, here is the sample board and then 3 images of the room created.  I'd have a video up too only the software stumbled a bit on it and my pc can only do so much...and I'm grateful it got me through the first semester so no complaints!

Happy Halloween!

A quick mash up noodle just to post something for Halloween as I haven't posted in a while and am a little rusty at the noodles.
Story is inspired by photos of Laytown and the stunning statue by the sea, taken by Roger Lawler at

Don't roll over just yet!

haven't done a noodle on this for ages - studying, and that takes up a ton of time but it is fun.  Pencil sketches due a re-run though, so will start throwing up some stuff over the coming weeks when I get the chance.
Above is pencil sketch scanned in darker, before applying some colour and background and messing about on Corel.  The results are below and were a noodle for ICN done a few weeks back.  As mentioned, fingers crossed I make time to re-vamp the blog before it rolls over and plays dead! :)

Just a posting of one of last months noodles.  Keeping updates on blogs can be a challenge sometimes.  It would probably make a whole lot more sense to put the blogs on one site or something...who knows..that could be more work to update!  Anyway, aside from my little ramble, here is a quick sketch then corel painter colour from August.

Bit slow on the blogs of late...caught up with other projects and often a quick sketch and blog posting gets neglected.  Noodlers bit still a go-go so here is one from the last while in case you haven't checked it out on ICN.

Graphic stuff

Playing with some sketches and then shapes to see what graphic type stuff could be created.  Bar codes of colours mixed with sketches of the lovely Gotham Girls and a layer with some rough colours representing each of them.  Was aiming for that slightly 50s/60s vibe with it.

Monster Allergy

A quick little doodle from Monster Allergy - done in pencils first, which I kinda like better, then  very rough colours and the text was put in properly.  Enjoyed this doodle a lot. :)

Irish Comic News website is a year old this week! Huzzah! So as part of this celebration, the website is hosting a number of fantastic competitions all week, just go to to check it all out and enter.
Also being celebrated alongsite the year old acheivement is the Irish Comics Appreciation Week.  This is the week to purchase, promote and pay respect to all the great comic artists in the country that are working hard producing great work...often for no pay and often with little appreciation for the art form.
Hats off to all the IRISH COMIC NOODLERS and in particular hats off to the key people running the show: Tommie Kelly, David O'Leary and Patrick Brown - excellent team members for ICN - and I'm very proud to be part of this team! :)

Irish Comic Noodlers

Just a quick gathering of images done with pencil base and digital colour finish from the ICN Noodle on Tuesdays. It's nice to gather some of them together to see what was done and how it works. It's good to see how certain effects worked really well or fell short in other applications. Interesting. Hope you like too! :)

Noodle for ICN due up tomorrow, and wanted to post up the pencils but then found I hadn't saved the friggin original. The finished piece is grand enough, with plenty of layers and effects, but it amazes me how the pencils can get lost in the noise and layers. I'm still learning a lot, and what is really becoming clear is that I throw a lot of pencils, sketches and effects together and that isn't necessarily a good idea. It can and has left some of the work hangin or looking not as sharp or clean. The pencils looked light and had good shading but scanned they were rough as hell, and without inking it fell short. Inking it would have interfered with the light colouring I was intending to do...which is not how it evolved but the intention was there! Anyways, might go back and redo it with inking and a proper clean finish just as a comparison for myself. It does look like I got heavy handed in my approach with layering and colours. Might be a good time to learn from that and move on. Next time I might just lightly wash over it or something.
I've attached one of the wallpapers I made for layering, which I liked. It got printed, redrawn and noodled with a lot after this.

Ninja Jump

Had a photo my brother took of me jumping in the snow on the beach ages back, so I messed about with it on Corel and copied it a few times. Went for a 'ninja power ranger charge' look, only my ninja look includes a brolly. It was heavy snow so a brolly was handy, and I don't know that ninjas would really need it. Most likely not.

Romantic Mayhem Launch Night!

The latest project completed is a collaborative effort for a banner 'National Tragedy' called Romantic Mayhem. A great idea thrown into being by Gar Shanley, and through persistence and help it's managed to reach the finish line.
This coming Saturday will be the launch party for it, all welcome, being held upstairs in Anseo in Lower Camden Street. Hope to catch you there for it!

Alice in Zombieland

Never drink the bottle that says 'drink me!' could turn into a zombie. This is a posting for the and I thought I'd test myself on using corel from start to finish. Normally it's sketch on paper, tidy it up and then scan it in and tweak it in corel. This time round it was sketch, tweak, layer, more layers and then finish. It could be more developed but I got stuck with it so finished it off as best as possible. It's a good experiment though so I'll be trying it out again until I get a proper handle on it.
I've had some postings over on ICN which I can now post here, so will throw up a few in the next week or so as a way to get this blog moving again.

Creator Owned Day! 1st March!

Busy day today for comics as there is a great little buzz going around about the Creator Owned Day. If you're unfamiliar with it then please do visit
and find out all about how the idea got going.
I've posted up on because that is what I created and I'm very proud of little 'ol Superhilbo. More stories are underway but like everything else, it takes time. :)
Above is a sample mock up promo poster I was doing at the end of last year, for a great band called The Sleep Thieves. It was going in a Ghostworld direction, but it kinda fell short a little, but I like the first panel a lot. Fun to do. :)

Testing some bits out and seeing what works. I like the text and want to merge it with a more natural looking font. Might add some more variation to the background.
